Exploring Cornwall
Where We Go When We’re Not at Work
Off the Clock – Our Team’s Guide to Exploring Cornwall…
When it comes to uncovering the true character of Cornwall, who better to ask than the people who live and breathe it every day? In this blog, we take a step beyond the hotel and into the lives of our Penventon team, finding out where they go and what they love to do when they’re off the clock.
Our team naturally loves to explore Cornwall, so we asked them when they’re not working hard at creating the finest guest experiences, what do they get up to? And where are their top recommendations for things to do in Cornwall? As expected, they didn’t disappoint. From hidden gems to much loved local favourites, their suggestions offer something for everyone visiting!
Whether you’re a couple exploring Cornwall in the summer, a family on the hunt for quieter spots, or just looking to experience Cornwall like a local, this list is a great place to start. And for more recommendations about things to do in Cornwall on your next trip, visit our page linked below.

Jess | The Buttermarket – Redruth
Jess, our Marketing Manager and go-to for top local foodie tips (especially if you’re veggie), has a new favourite spot: The Buttermarket in Redruth. This recently revitalised space has been transformed from a once-forgotten historic building into a vibrant hub for food, drink, and local culture. It’s home to a mix of independent street food stalls, pop-up events, and community gatherings.
She loves the lively atmosphere and the variety of food stalls, and says it’s worth visiting for Filthy Focaccia alone – the latest exciting addition to The Buttermarket. “One bite in and I was already planning my next visit,” she says.
Holly | Marazion
Although you’ll usually catch our Executive Head Housekeeper Holly in her garden tending to her beautiful rescue hens, she loves a trip to the beach at Marazion with her family.
If you’re searching for family-friendly things to do in Cornwall, a day in Marazion ticks all the boxes. This charming seaside town is home to lovely independent cafés, little shops to browse, and breathtaking views of the iconic St Michael’s Mount, a tidal island steeped in history and local legend. At low tide, you can even walk across the cobbled causeway to explore the mount itself. Or simply grab a coffee and enjoy a relaxed stroll along the long stretch of sandy beach, perfect for paddling, picnics, and soaking up the coastal calm.

Agris | Slice Of Cornwall
Our Bar & Restaurant Manager, Agris, recommends making a stop at Slice of Cornwall next time you’re in the area. Tucked away near the Helford, Slice is one of those hidden gems that feels like a real find. It’s the ideal place to refuel after a long coastal walk or a refreshing swim at the nearby Grebe beach. The menu is packed with indulgent brunch options, but it’s the waffles that really steal the show… seriously, some of the tastiest you’ll ever try. Great coffee, lush surroundings, and a laid-back vibe make it well worth the detour.
Cat | Crabbing at St Ives Pier
Cat, our Leisure Club Manager, recommends crabbing off the pier at St Ives. A simple and family friendly way to spend an hour or two exploring Cornwall. All you need is a line, a bucket, and a bit of bait (bacon or fish of-cuts seems to be the favourite), and you’re set. It’s a great activity for all ages, with plenty of friendly competition over who can catch the biggest crab. Plus, the views across the St Ives harbour are gorgeous, especially when the sun’s out and the water sparkles. Grab a coffee or an ice cream nearby and make a proper morning of it.

Sally | Trevaskis Farm Strawberry Picking
Sally’s our brilliant Reception Manager, and when she’s not at work she makes the most of exploring Cornwall with her family and two lovable dogs, Bleu and Baily. One of their favourite days out is strawberry picking at Trevaskis Farm, a perfect choice if you’re looking for things to do in Cornwall with kids. Just a short drive from us, Trevaskis is the kind of place that invites you to slow down and savour the season.
The ‘pick your own’ fields are open most of the year, and there’s a fantastic farm shop filled with fresh local produce, plus a café serving up hearty Cornish treats. It’s a wholesome, easy-going day out the whole family will love.
Carenza | Gilbert’s Beach Bar – Hayle
Carenza, our Events Administrator, is always up for a beach day and knows exactly where to go for the perfect coastal escape. One of her top picks is Gilbert’s Beach Bar in Hayle, a laid-back restaurant and bar set right on the sand, with unbeatable views of St Ives Bay. It’s the ideal spot for sipping cocktails in the sand or refuelling after a day of exploring Cornwall. The menu features everything from fresh seafood to tasty beachside bites, and the relaxed vibe makes it just as perfect for lazy afternoons as it is for sunset drinks.

Angel | Kiln Sauna
One of our Marketing Assistant’s Angels’ favourite things to do and top recommendation if you’re after something a bit different, is a morning session at one of Kiln’s beachside saunas. It’s a peaceful way to start the day, plus, you get all the health benefits of a sauna with unbeatable views over Gylly Beach. Even better, you’re just steps away from the sea, so you can take a little dip between sauna sessions.
Hannah | Penventon farm nursery and Amy’s Kitchen
Hannah, one of our friendly faces on Reception, can often be found at her favourite hidden gem. This is a proper treat, especially if you’re looking to explore Cornwall like a local. Tucked away at Penventon Farm Nursery, Amy’s Kitchen is a cosy, welcoming spot that comes highly recommended by quite a few of the team. It’s the perfect Sunday afternoon escape where you can enjoy homemade cakes, a delicious lunch and good coffee while feeling a world away from the crowds.

David | Lamorna Beach – Penzance
David, another one of the friendly faces you’ll meet at reception. He’s full of knowledge about Cornwall and has explored much of the Cornish coast as an avid runner. Having explored much of the Cornish coastline, he’s full of recommendations, but one of his favourite hidden spots is Lamorna Beach. Tucked away just a few miles from the more well-known Porthcurno, Lamorna is a tiny harbour with crystal-clear turquoise waters in the sun.
It’s a peaceful little escape with easy access thanks to a car park right by the beach, making it perfect for a scenic stop or the starting point for a coastal walk. Whether you’re after a quiet swim, a picnic with a view, or a stroll along the South West Coast Path, Lamorna is a must-visit gem off the beaten track.
Ernesta | Tehidy Woods
If you’ve joined us for breakfast or lunch, you’ll probably recognise Ernesta – one of our lovely F&B Supervisors. When she’s not looking after guests, she loves nothing more than spending time outdoors with her family, discovering all that Cornwall has to offer. One of her favourite spots is Tehidy Woods, a peaceful, enchanting woodland for a relaxed family day out. She loves strolling through the trails, spotting wildlife, and just soaking up the calm.
Tucked away in the woods is a charming little café, ideal for a post-walk lunch, serving a mix of sweet treats and savoury bites to suit everyone. Whether you’re after fresh air, a gentle walk, or just somewhere to escape the crowds, Tehidy is a must.
