Hazel – Cornwall Coast Mighty Hike 2024
Hazel – On the 31st of August, Hazel is taking part in the ‘Cornwall Coast Mighty Hike 2024’ to raise vital funds for people living with cancer. All proceeds are going towards Macmillan Cancer Support.
Hazel has been a cherished member of our team for over two and a half years, known for her infectious smile and warm laughter. Loved by all who have met her, she’s been a constant source of joy for our guests. While you might recognise Hazel as a key part of our Leisure Club team, she originally joined us as a talented bartender. You can still occasionally find her behind the bar, expertly mixing one of her signature fruity and refreshing cocktails.
In just a few days, Hazel, along with her sister-in-law Vienna (who is also a member of our Leisure Club team) and their friends, will embark on a significant challenge in support of an incredible cause: Macmillan Cancer Support. We invite you to read Hazel’s inspiring story…
“Cancer has affected so many of my friends and family. The statistics show that 1 in 2 people will have Cancer at one point in their life and that’s sadly been true for me.
When I was 11, my Dad passed away of lung cancer and in the last 15 years, I’ve lost both my Nan and Grandad to Cancer. My brother had a diagnosis of Throat Cancer but thankfully beat it, and I’ve also had one of my friends recently beat Stage 3 Skin Cancer!
I have always tried to do something each year to raise money for Cancer Research like ‘Pretty Muddy’ or ‘Race for Life’, but this year myself and a group of friends have decided to do a marathon hike for Macmillan. It is my biggest one yet!
Thank You to everybody who has sponsored us so far. We would love to raise £2000 for this amazing charity that are helping families through what I have been through”.

“I started work here 27½ years ago in 1996 in the Restaurant alongside my studies, to save money for university. I started in the Restaurant working all hours, often until 2am, and have since worked in almost every department, starting full time in Reception in 2001 and have been a part of the furniture ever since.
From 2001-2013, I worked both full time in Reception with additional Restaurant Maire d’ and F&B shifts, averaging approximately 65 hours a week. Since 2013, I’ve worked solely in Reception (as well as office admin).I started my running journey with my first London Marathon in 2006.
As a child, I had always watched & been inspired by the London Marathon, and knew that I would take part one day.
My father passed away when I was 26 after a short illness in 2005. He spent his final days at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle, who do absolutely remarkable work. The care & compassion that they give on a daily basis is unrivalled.
Dad knew that I’d entered for a place in my first London Marathon, but sadly passed away a month before I was given the opportunity, and so I ran in his memory to raise money for Cornwall Hospice Care (St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle & Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell).I have subsequently run the London Marathon 13 times to date, each time for Cornwall Hospice Care, with my last one in 2019. After a five year break, and nearly 20 years after my first one, I am back to take part once again, older & slower.
Over the years, countless other people (including colleagues & friends along the way) have spent time in or have been helped by Cornwall Hospice Care, and I am proud to say that to date (along with my twin brother Anthony) I have raised for them over £33,000“.
