Why Italian Wines Are Among the World’s Most Celebrated

Italy is the beating heart of the wine world. From the foothills of Piedmont to the sun-drenched vineyards of Sicily, every region tells a story through its grapes. With more native grape varieties than any other country, Italy’s wines are celebrated for their diversity, character, and unmistakable sense of place.

Italian winemaking has a history that stretches back thousands of years, yet every vintage feels alive with innovation. Whether it’s the crisp minerality of Gavi, the bold richness of Amarone, or the sparkling elegance of Prosecco, Italian wines have an enduring ability to bring people together around the table — and this is exactly what we celebrate through our wine tasting in Cornwall events.

If you’re familiar with our history, then you’ll know one of our original owners, Paula Pascoe, was born and raised in Venice — and her passion for Italy, its culture, and its food and wine traditions has always been part of the Penventon’s soul. Today, the hotel remains family-owned by the Pascoe family, and that heritage continues to shape the experiences we create for our guests, especially here in our wine bar in Cornwall, which has become a hub for wine lovers near and far.

This special event is our chance to share that love with you. Over the course of the evening, we’ll journey through five carefully chosen Italian wines — each paired with a tasting plate that enhances its story. For anyone seeking an authentic Italian wine tasting in Cornwall, this evening promises something truly unforgettable.

Bervini Puro Brut Organic Prosecco DOC

Italian Wine Tasting in Cornwall - Bervini Puro Brut Organic Prosecco DOC

Tasting Notes:

Pale straw yellow with a fine, persistent mousse and refined perlage. Fresh apple and pear dominate, with delicate citrus and a subtle mineral edge from Sequals’ rocky soils. Crisp, lively, and elegant thanks to a long, cold 60-day refermentation.

Producer Information:

Produced by Bervini in Friuli, whose winemaking philosophy is based on the Italian concept of Bere Bene (“drink well”). Their “Puro” line embodies purity and innocence—symbolised by the lamb on the label—and showcases the estate’s commitment to organic cultivation and quality-driven winemaking.

Petrarinusa Organic Pinot Grigio Sicilia

Italian Wine Tasting in Cornwall - Petrarinusa Organic Pinot Grigio Sicilia

Tasting Notes:

Bright and fresh with delicate notes of stone fruit and citrus. Rounded and well-balanced on the palate with a cleansing, refreshing finish.

Producer Information:

The name Petrarinusa comes from the Sicilian dialect, describing the stony, sandy soils of the Valle del Belice. These terroirs bring out the best expression in both native and international grape varieties, and the project reflects the collaboration of dedicated growers and agronomists to achieve purity and precision in every bottle.

Il Portino Gavi

Italian Wine Tasting in Cornwall - Il Portino Gavi

Tasting Notes:

Aromas of white blossom, stone fruit, and fresh herbs. Medium-bodied and dry, with crisp citrus freshness and a fine thread of minerality. A pure expression of the Cortese grape variety.

Producer Information:

Made by Villa Sparina, whose winemaking heritage dates back to the 1700s. The estate lies in Monterotondo in the heart of Gavi, one of the finest areas for Cortese cultivation. Of the estate’s 100 hectares of vineyards, 70 are dedicated to native varieties, with a strong focus on Gavi and Barbera.

Petrarinusa Organic Nero D’Avola Sicilia

Italian Wine Tasting in Cornwall - Petrarinusa Organic Nero D'Avola Sicilia

Tasting Notes:

Medium-bodied, approachable, and smooth. Bursting with red fruit flavours layered with subtle herbal spice, framed by gentle tannins and bright Sicilian sunshine ripeness.

Producer Information:

From the Petrarinusa project in Sicily’s Valle del Belice. The stony, sandy soils here allow Nero d’Avola—the island’s signature grape—to ripen beautifully, expressing both fruit intensity and terroir nuance. The project reflects a broader study of terroirs, with viticulturists committed to bringing out the fullest potential of each variety.

Casa Giona Amarone della Valpolicella

Italian Wine Tasting in Cornwall - Casa Giona Amarone Della Valpolicella

Tasting Notes:

Deep ruby red with intense aromas of wild berries, currants, and oaky spice. The palate is powerful and concentrated, with layers of dark berries, dried fruit, and sweet spice, leading to a rich, lingering finish.

Producer Information:

Produced by Tenute SalvaTerra at Villa Giona in the Valpolicella Classica region. The estate, founded in Cengia near San Pietro in Cariano, sits among cypress trees, olive groves, and historic stone walls, with vineyards surrounding its late-15th-century villa. The Amarone is made in the traditional appassimento style, drying grapes before fermentation to achieve intensity and depth.

Your Host For The Evening – Meet Dott. Alberto Russo

“In 2013, I founded Taste Hub with a clear vision: to bring the incredible wines of my home region, Veneto, Italy, to the UK and abroad. What began as a passion project has since expanded, and I now proudly source exceptional wines from all across Italy, with exciting plans to step into Greece very soon!

Over the past decade, I’ve grown Taste Hub into a trusted partner for the Hospitality industry, both in the UK and internationally. My approach involves working closely with customers and partner wineries to identify new consumer opportunities, carefully select wines that resonate, and then create a complete brand experience—from design and development to packaging solutions. I personally support every launch, ensuring a smooth journey to market.

From the crisp notes of Prosecco and Gavi to the rich complexity of Italian reds, the vibrant character of Sicilian gems, and soon, the unique discoveries from Greek islands, I ensure our wholesale and specialist operators receive preferential access to products specifically matched to their individual needs. My dedication and passion are unwavering, no matter the size of the demand.

Since 2013, I’ve taken Taste Hub from a nascent idea to a financially sound business that now supplies some of the most recognized distributors in the UK. I’m incredibly proud to say I’ve overseen the sale of a few million bottles and created several recognized wine brands. What truly defines my success, however, is the mutual respect and trust that characterize my relationships with both customers and suppliers.”
