What to Do this Winter in Cornwall

Cornwall in winter is one of the most incredible times of year to visit.
The crowds of summer have dissipated, the landscape has turned wintery and the villages light up with a cosy festive atmosphere. The magic of Cornwall really shines in winter; where you feel transported back to a simpler time, surrounded by ancient history, rugged farmland, and Cornish culture. Long warm beach days no longer matter in a frosty Cornwall, instead, wintery walks, festive celebrations and Christmas markets take centre stage.
We have compiled a list of must-sees when visiting Cornwall in winter, and we recommend that everyone experiences a winter in Cornwall at least once…

1. Go Storm Watching

Picture it – wrapping up warm in your favourite coat and scarf, hot drink in hand, watching one of Cornwall’s epic storms; blistery and raging seas, wind and rain whipping the trees, and turquoise waves crashing against rocks.
Cornwall is known for its iconic storms, with the famous clock tower at Porthleven being the star in some of the most iconic images coming out of Cornwall. If you’re looking for big, crashing waves, any beach will do the trick, but we have some suggestions if you want to see something more dramatic.
Perranporth (20 minutes away) offers a different view of the storm from the huge coastal cliffs edging the sea, whereas Portreath (10 minutes away) offers the iconic lone lighthouse being thrashed by waves (pictured) and is a key destination for storm waters. Other exciting storm-watching destinations further afield include Newquay (30 minutes away), or Cape Cornwall (50 minutes away), which is one of the country’s renowned storm-watching locations and is well worth the drive.

Disclaimer: Take precautions when storm watching, don’t put yourself or others in danger, be sure to keep up to date with local weather warnings and adhere to advice given by authorities. Please keep dogs on a short leash.

2. Experience the Magic of Cornwall’s Beaches in Winter

With more than 300 beaches to explore along the Cornish coast, you’ll be spoiled for choice. The crowds of summer have long gone, and what’s left is serene windswept landscapes offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle. We’re lucky to be just a short drive away from some of Cornwall’s most beautiful beaches, Perranporth, Portreath, and Godrevey are all under 30 minutes away and offer everything you’re looking for in a Cornish beach adventure.
Bonus: Parking in winter is free in most beach car parks (always check before leaving your car) AND as dogs are allowed back on beaches meaning your furry friends can enjoy the beaches too! There’s nothing better than wrapping up warm, braving the elements, and feeling refreshed from the crisp sea air, a perfect winter in Cornwall activity.

3. Visit One of Cornwall’s Famous Seaside Villages

Winter is the perfect time to explore the charming villages of Cornwall. The narrow cobbled streets and quaint cottages create a nostalgic storybook setting and is unbelievably beautiful to explore. Meander through the narrow lanes of Port Isaac – famously known as the home to Fisherman’s Friends – or explore the historic harbour of Mousehole, adorned with festive lights or enjoy the cosy atmosphere of St.Ives, where art galleries and local shops provide a warm respite from the winter chill.

4. Explore local Cornish Culture

Cornwall’s rich heritage encompasses a captivating blend of ancient civilisations, a thriving mining and fishing industry, a vibrant language, and a unique tapestry of religious and cultural traditions. Delve into the depths of history by exploring ancient sites curated by the Cornwall Heritage Trust or embark on a journey through time at the National Trust’s historic houses and mines. Additionally, immerse yourself in the region’s artistic and cultural vibrancy by visiting its abundance of museums, art galleries, and theatrical productions.
